Pet Insurance and Travel Abroad

Your pet insurance should cover your pet whilst you and your pet travel abroad. This means that your pet will be protected against injury, illness and even getting lost whilst you are abroad. If you have to cancel your trip or delay returning as a direct result of an insured loss or injury for your pet, you may find that you are also insured against costs incurred.

Some pet insurance policies will cover your pet both abroad and at home. This means that your beloved animal is protected no matter where they are. You will usually only be covered for a maximum number of trips per period of insurance. Your cover may also depend on your pet travelling under the government's PETS scheme, which allows you to take your pet to specific countries abroad and then re-enter the UK without needing to quarantine your pet. You will have to provide health certificates to demonstrate that your pet has been fully checked and approved by a registered veterinary practise.

If you lose or damage these important health certificates whilst on a trip, your pet insurance may also cover the cost of replacement up to £250. This usually includes quarantine costs which you might incur as a result of losing your pet's health certificate.

Good pet insurance will cover the cost of emergency treatment for your pet abroad. This includes covering any additional accommodation and travel costs for you, as well as repatriation costs and expenses for your pet - all up to a specified amount. This means you would be protected against missing your flight home, for example, if it was the result of your pet's insured injury or illness. If your pet is lost whilst you are away, you will also be allowed reasonable travel and accommodation costs whilst you try to find your pet before your scheduled return to the UK.

With this comprehensive level of cover, you can feel safe in the knowledge that your pet will be fully protected both at home and abroad. When you are choosing your pet insurance, it is worth ensuring that your pet always receives this level of protection - so that you can enjoy your holiday together.
